Great Plains Transportation Museum hit with $10,000 in vandalism damage

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) — Vandals caused about $10,000 worth of damage at the Great Plains Transportation Museum in downtown Wichita this week, breaking windows on locomotives and other equipment and draining oil from at least one locomotive engine.

Executive Director Lon Smith said the damage includes historic windows that cannot be fully restored to their original condition.

“Some of those windows they broke out are historic windows,” Smith said. “So, yes we can replace the glass. Will people know for sure that it isn’t historic glass? Probably not. But, you know, you try to preserve things as well as you can.”

Fence construction underway at primary access point

Smith said the museum is constructing a fence at what he described as the primary access point to the property, where people were climbing stairs, getting onto a roof and then dropping down onto museum grounds…
