City agrees to near-$500K settlement after Wichita police vehicle hits scooter, injures 2

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Approaching two years since a Wichita police vehicle rear-ended a gas-powered scooter, injuring two people, the city is expected to pay out nearly $500,000 to resolve the matter. In the consent agenda portion of the Wichita City Council’s next meeting on Tuesday, there’s recommended action for the elected group to authorize payment of $498,340.

A meeting’s consent agenda primarily includes routine items grouped into a single block that collectively pass with a single vote, often unanimous. On its report previewing items on the city council’s agenda for Tuesday, the city identified Joseph Oliver and Patricia Carrion as plaintiffs regarding the near-half-million-dollar settlement.

Oliver’s lawsuit against the City of Wichita provides further information about the crash on Nov. 18, 2024. The lawsuit said that WPD Officer Taylor Reichard “negligently and wantonly rear-ended [Oliver’s] scooter.”…
