First African American Wichita police captain dies

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – The first African American woman to serve as a captain with the Wichita Police Department has died.

Felecia Norris died June 29 near Houston, Texas. She was 68.

Norris joined the department in 1981 as a patrol officer, later serving as a detective, sergeant and lieutenant before being promoted to captain of the Patrol North Bureau.

In 2010, she became director of the WPD Records Bureau before retiring in 2014.
