Wichita’s newest burger restaurant is a couple of weeks from opening

When Sebastian Gordon was in high school and was preparing to take the ACT, he was nervous, he remembers. The night before, he and a couple of buddies went to the Wendy’s at Central and Edgemoor and had dinner, choosing to sit in the little atrium on the front of the building.

His friends told him not to sweat the test, and he felt a lot better, Gordon remembers.

Now, nearly two decades later, Gordon is about to open his own restaurant in that very building, which is at 5510 E. Central. His Black Bird Burger — a more casual sister restaurant to his nearby Red Bird sandwich restaurant at 6440 E. Central — should be open within the next two weeks, he said.

Gordon and his wife, Ashley, and the couple’s partner in the restaurant, Matt Edwards, own the restaurant together. Gordon says that, unlike Red Bird, Black Bird Burger will be a fast-food place whose offerings are elevated. Like Wendy’s, it will serve burgers and fries, but Black Bird’s will be gourmet smash burgers made with Creekstone Farms ground beef. Instead of basic fries, it’ll serve curly fries and battered sweet potato waffle fries…
