WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – As the Air Capital continues to see 100-degree days in September, veterinarians are warning dog owners to make heat safety a priority.
Dr. Adlyn Crockett is a veterinarian at Wichita’s Prairie Ridge Animal Hospital who has seen firsthand how dangerous the extremely hot weather can be for dogs.
“Cellular destruction or breakdown, if you will, by the heat. It just kind of destroys the cells essentially, and kind of promotes a lot of inflammation in the body,” Dr. Crockett said.
Record-breaking heat continues for a few more days
She says that could mean damage to the dog’s brain, heart, kidney, or even gastrointestinal tract, with extreme cases of overheating resulting in death. But even in less extreme cases, dog owners who aren’t careful about the hot pavement could put their dog’s paws into a painful predicament…
