Storm Track 3 Forecast: Evening tornado potential, rain continues Thursday

Scattered showers and thunderstorms continue through today. Some of these thunderstorms may quickly produce tornadoes this evening. A Tornado Watch is in effect until 11 PM Wednesday.

We saw this type of development yesterday evening and today the threat will be more widespread from central into eastern Kansas. The threat could quickly ramp up and ramp down in this tropical environment.

While these are typically weaker tornadoes, they can still cause significant damage. We have more shear or spin available in the atmosphere today as the remains of Hurricane Polo interact with the storm system tracking through the area.

Flooding is the other side of the coin. Flood Watches remain in effect through Thursday evening, and more counties have been gradually added.

Another 1″ to 3″ of rain looks probable for Kansas before the front sweeps us clean and dry later this week. More scattered showers and thunderstorms develop on Thursday.

There will be a slight shift southeastward as the cold front steers the moisture away. Any leftovers early Friday morning head for the exit to the southeast.

Much drier and cooler air is coming behind this front. Lows Friday morning in the 40s and 50s will become widespread. Highs in the afternoon may barely make it to 70 degrees. This weekend will be gorgeous for fall.

Highs return to the 70s with lows in the 40s and 50s. Picture perfect for Woofstock, the Kansas Humane Society’s annual fundraiser, on Saturday. Next week looks largely dry with highs in the 70s.
