Developers share concerns about duplex regulations in northwest suburb meeting

Maize is not likely to see any changes to the rules governing duplex developments or design standards before the end of the year. The fast-growing city says it is going to review existing regulations, which could lead to stricter enforcement.

That decision is one of the most significant outcomes following a recent planning commission workshop, where builders and developers voiced concerns about the city of Maize potentially approving duplex design regulations that would be similar to what the city of Goddard adopted earlier this year.

Those proposed regulations would require developers to include at least one “active amenity” owned and maintained by the developer or, eventually, by a homeowners’ association; a minimum of two trees per lot; a minimum of five different exterior designs in any given neighborhood; glass, including sidelights, transom windows and other transparent or glazed design elements, must make up at least 10% of the exterior space; garage doors cannot cover more than 60% of the front of any given unit; and each duplex built without a basement must include a storm shelter or safe room…
