Adults learn how to assess youth mental health challenges

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – There are warning signs and symptoms that can show you or someone else is experiencing a mental health crisis. But how do you assess those situations?

On Friday, Sedgwick County COMCARE and Mental Health First Aid hosted a youth mental health training class for adults to learn the right skills.

We talked to a couple of participants about how they felt the class prepared them and why taking these classes is important.

“We have been going through how to assess warning signs and what traumatic events might look like and then how to talk the children through their feelings and how to express themselves and then how to get help and support,” participant Alisha Gridley said.

“I think that youth they’re still developing and they’re still learning about themselves. So for us to be able to encourage them and help them learn about themselves. And also just get them to the place where they feel safe within themselves is really important,” participant Elisha Stone said.
