Black History Month: Kansans who played pivotal roles in push for civil rights

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – February 1 marks the beginning of Black History Month, a time to recognize the contributions of African Americans in U.S. history. The Civil Rights Movement played a pivotal role in helping expand what was known as “Negro History Week.” Started by Carl G. Woodson in the 1920s, Black History Month was officially recognized in 1976.
