Man dead after officer-involved shooting in east Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in east Wichita Wednesday night. It happened just after 11 p.m. at Hillside and Central.

“This evening, officers conducted a traffic stop in the 500 block of Hillside. The traffic stop concluded where you see right behind us at the McDonald’s parking lot,” Andrew Ford, WPD public information officer, said.

After the attempted traffic stop, Ford said officers approached the vehicle.

“Officers went to approach the vehicle where they were speaking to a gentleman in the rear seat of the vehicle. At that time, during the exchange, officers attempted to detain the suspect. In the process of detaining that suspect, the officers got into a struggle with that male while he was seated in the rear of the vehicle. While seated in the rear of that vehicle, while officers were struggling with the male to get him out of the vehicle, he was able to break free while still inside of the vehicle. At that time, the suspect inside of the rear passenger seat produced a firearm,” he said.
