Kittens and cats find fresh start at Derby nonprofit

DERBY, Kan. (KSNW) – A nonprofit in Derby considers themselves a kitten kingdom.

“We are small but mighty,” said Maria Mannani, a volunteer with Save the Kitties.

Mannari serves as the foster coordinator for the no-kill rescue.

“We minimize the number of cats that pass away from neglect or not being treated correctly,” she said.

The nonprofit focuses its mission on three R’s, starting with rescue.

“Save the Kitties really focuses on euthanasia saves from the Wichita Animal Shelter,” she explained. “We also do take owner surrenders when we have space in this facility.”

The other R’s are to rehabilitate and re-home.

“It’s really reassuring. You feel like you’re doing some good for the cat and the people that are taking the kitty in,” Mannani said.

The rescue is currently at capacity with over 120 cats between the facility and in foster homes. While the animals are in their care, volunteers make it a point to spay and neuter.
