Valley Center man shot three-wheeled bike rider by Wichita park. He’s going to prison

A 24-year-old Valley Center man was sentenced Thursday to life in prison in the fatal shooting of another man by Central Riverside Park in 2021.

A jury in May convicted Derek A. Zamzow of first-degree murder in the death of 32-year-old Jason D. Huber of Wichita , as well as counts of aggravated robbery and criminal possession of a weapon by a convicted felon. Huber was shot as he was riding his three-wheeled bike at Murdock and Stackman around 2:15 a.m. on Sept. 2, 2021. Wichita police have said his killer crouched by a wall of the Little Arkansas Bridge until Huber rode by then stood up, fired and stole the bicycle.

Officers responded after someone who saw Huber lying on a sidewalk called 911. He died from two gunshot wounds to the head and one to his buttocks, a probable cause affidavit released in the case says.

Zamzow questioned the veracity of the affidavit in a July 18 court filing that claims the document is misleading, omitted important facts and relies on statements from a man he says falsely accused him.
