Sedgwick County accepts land for new state mental hospital

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Sedgwick County is moving forward with plans to build a state mental health hospital in south Wichita.

Commissioners approved an agreement with Lange Community Foundation, which donated just under 12 acres near Meridian and MacArthur.

Sedgwick County Commissioner Sarah Lopez says the South Central Regional Psychiatric Hospital will provide a much-needed service. It’s one of several currently in the works.

“It’s a desperately needed resource in this community. It’s not going to fix all of our problems, but there is so much happening at the same time, whether it’s the Biomed campus or an expansion of Comcare to the MAC ,” said Lopez.

The county expects construction to start in February.
