Staff from closed Wichita schools move to new buildings

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – More than 300 staff in Wichita public schools are moving to different positions in the district this year.

All those teachers and support staff are coming from the six schools that closed their doors at the end of the school year due to USD 259’s budget shortfall.

While it is a strenuous process, both the teachers’ union and district officials are saying overall, this is turning out to be a positive change.

The union representing Wichita teachers says it can be a stressful process for educators used to their routines.

“The district has been very good at making sure they’re engaged in conversation and doing everything they can to make it as seamless as possible for us, for the teachers,” said Mike Harris, United Teachers of Wichita vice president.

“Anybody that wanted to stay within the district … had the option to look on their own and find a new home, as you will, within the district,” said USD 259 Chief Human Resources Officer Sean Hudspeth.
