Thunderstorms give Wichita its biggest daily rain total in nearly eight weeks

Thunderstorms with high winds, heavy rain, and lightning moved through parts of the Wichita area and Kansas early Tuesday, giving Wichita its most daily rain in about eight weeks.

The storms led to power outages in the southeast, central, and west parts of Wichita. With nearly constant lightning for awhile, at one point early Tuesday morning 7,000 Evergy customers in the Wichita area were without power. By late morning, 90% of the power had been restored.

A wind gust of 60 miles per hour was reported in W. Wichita at Dwight D. Eisenhower Airport, and a 58-m.p.h. gust came through McConnell Air Force Base on the southeast side of town.

A downed power line in Derby closed Patriot Avenue between Buckner and Commerce.

The McPherson area received 2.75 inches of rain; Derby got about two inches of rain, and Eastborough in the Wichta area totalled nearly 1.4 inches.

Flood Warnings were in effect for Wichita, as well as McPherson & Marion counties.

Wichita officially received 1.23 inches of rain from the storms, as measured at Eisenhower Airport on the west side of town; that’s the most since in one day since June 19 when Wichita got 1.33 inches of rain.
