Teen girls charged in elderly woman Joanne Johnson’s ‘gut-wrenching & disgusting’ murder won’t face trial as adults

TWO juvenile girls arrested for the murder of a 93-year-old woman cannot face trial as adults, according to the state’s juvenile justice code.

Joanne Johnson was found dead in her home in Augusta, Kansas , about 30 minutes east of Wichita, on September 3, 2023.

Investigators at the time ruled Johnson’s death a homicide and immediately launched a probe into the killing.

Johnson’s murder went unsolved for nearly a year when, on August 15, the Kansas Bureau of Investigations announced the arrest of two 14-year-old girls.

The girls, whose names were not released because of their age, appeared in court on Monday and were ordered to be held in juvenile detention centers.

Nearly a year after his mother’s murder, Tim Johnson said the incident is still raw in his mind.

“It’s so hard to describe because it’s not closure,” Tim told CBS affiliate KWCH-12 regarding the news of the girls’ arrest.
