Kansas Honor Flight is celebrating a huge milestone

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Kansas Honor Flight will celebrate a huge milestone next week. The 100th flight will take veterans to Washington, D.C., on Monday and return on Wednesday afternoon.

“Since then, we have taken 4,104 veterans on the flight,” said Pat Leon, Kansas Honor Flight volunteer. “It is completely free to the veteran if they are Kansas, World War II, Korea, or Vietnam.”

The volunteers for Kansas Honor Flight say the trip often provides closure for the veterans.

“We have had wives send us messages afterwards saying literally, my husband came back a different man. Especially from the Vietnam Era because there is this healing and closure that they get being there with the other veterans and being there to share stories and experiences that can be very helpful to them,” Leon said.

When the flight returns on Wednesday, there will be a welcome-home ceremony at the Red Roof Inn at Kellogg and Ridge at 12:30. Governor Laura Kelly will be in attendance. The public is invited to welcome veterans with homemade signs and banners.
