Late Heights AD Mike Church to be honored with Friends University scholarship

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Late Wichita Heights High School Athletic Director Mike Church, who died from brain cancer in February, will now have a lasting legacy at Friends University.

Church was a pillar in the wrestling community in Wichita. What he did for the youth here will now live on through future wrestlers who pass through Friends University’s Wrestling Program.

Laura Church, Mike Church’s widow, said seeing her late husband’s name, forever at her alma mater, would’ve made him smile.

“Of course, Friends holds a special place in my heart; that’s where I went to school, that’s where I worked for the first part of my career. So it’s really cool that his name will be etched there forever,” Laura said.

She said Mike remained someone who mentored young people in wrestling and at Wichita Heights High School as the athletic director through his fight with brain cancer.

A cancer that came back after he beat it the first time.

She believes the scholarship honors multiple things Mike stood for in his life.
