Sisters of St. Joseph building to be used for fire training

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A building owned by the Sisters of St. Joseph in Wichita will be used for fire training.

The City of Wichita says the Sisters have donated the building on the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph campus at 3700 E. Lincoln. The building is scheduled to be deconstructed, and most of its materials will be repurposed.

The building was constructed in 1915 after the previous structure, built in 1887, burned down three years prior. It hasn’t been in use in several years.

Work to deconstruct the building will begin on Wednesday. After that, firefighters with the City of Wichita will use the facility for training.

The city says no live fire or explosives will be used during training. However, residents in the area will see emergency vehicles and hear sounds associated with firefighting operations.

The city says the facility allows firefighters to train in real-life scenarios in an unfamiliar environment, similar to what they may experience in a real emergency.
