Competency questioned again before Joseph Randle goes to trial

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Joseph Randle will again undergo an evaluation to determine if he is competent to stand trial.

A jury trial was scheduled to begin Tuesday in Sedgwick County District Court in connection to a 2018 sexual assault in northeast Wichita.

According to the Wichita Police Department, around 1 a.m. on Sept. 7, 2018, officers responded to an apartment near Kansas Highway 96 and Rock Road. When they arrived, they found a woman who was 28 years old at the time with minor facial injuries. She reported being sexually assaulted by Randle.

Randle has yet to face trial partly because he has repeatedly been found incompetent to stand trial. Most recently, he was found competent to stand trial in 2023, only to be found incompetent again after receiving an independent evaluation.

He was returned to Wichita earlier this year, and a jury trial was scheduled to begin on Tuesday. However, a spokesperson for the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office says there was an incident this morning during jury selection, and Randle’s attorney asked for a new evaluation.
