Purple Heart veteran buried in unmarked Wichita grave gets headstone after 54 years

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A veteran from St. John has been buried in Wichita for more than 50 years. However, his grave had been left unmarked.

KSN’s Derek Lytle first brought us this story on Memorial Day , now several months later, a stone remembering Private First Class Christopher Gutierrez has been placed in his memory.

Teresa Guerrero said she had been trying to get her cousin, Private First Class Christopher Gutierrez, a headstone for years, but was running into bumps in the road.

That’s when a rep from the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration saw our story, and reached out. The family said their fallen family member now has proper recognition at his final resting place.

Half a century ago, buried in an unmarked grave at Calvary Cemetery, Private First Class Christopher Gutierrez lacked an identifying marker.

“I’m just glad, because 54 years without any recognition, he shouldn’t have had to go that long,” said Teresa Guerrero.
