Wild Side: Chewie the Sloth sees life upside down

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — KSN News had the pleasure of welcoming Chewie the Sloth to our noon news Wild Side segment on Wednesday. Most of the time, you can find him at Tanganyika Wildlife Park in Goddard.

Kiana Lucero from Tanganyika shared the spotlight with Chewie, especially since he would not let go of her.

Chewie is short for Chewbacca. He is a two-toed sloth.

“It’s kind of a confusing name because all sloths have three toes,” Lucero said. “So he does have two claws up on his hands, and that’s how he gets that name. Personally, I think he should be called a two-fingered sloth.”

Chewie was born at a zoo in Missouri but has lived at Tanganyika most of his life. While at KSN, he kept putting his head back and looking at the lights.

“Lights are exciting to him,” Lucero said. “But also, they’re used to living upside down in the rainforest. So he kind of moves throughout the trees, hanging upside down … and so he just likes to be upside down and look at everything upside down.”
