WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW)—Wichita Public Schools just released the latest draft of its new student code of conduct.
The code of conduct is a district-wide standardized discipline policy being rolled out as part of an agreement between the district and the U.S. Department of Justice. This comes out after a DOJ investigation found discrimination against students based on race and disabilities.
The goal of this new code of conduct is to create consistency in the consequences for different student behaviors across the district. The DOJ says schools within the district discriminated against students when doling out discipline based on race and ability level.
The new code of conduct has to be finalized in January.

According to the union representing Wichita teachers, the district has presented drafts of the code to school administrative staff.
Implementation from school to school has differed, which has caused some confusion among educators regarding addressing student behavioral issues. The district says they’ve tried to rectify some of those issues with this latest draft.
