Wichita’s new emergency winter homeless shelter is now open at the former Park Elementary school building on north Main. Mayor Lily Wu tells KNSS News HumanKind Ministries will operate the shelter for the next four months. After that the shelter will become a one-stop shelter and resource center to assist the homeless.
At Tuesday’s meeting, the Wichita City Council will look at raising water and sewer rates. Mayor Lily Wu tells KNSS News rates will increase aboout six percenbt. She says the average increase per household will be about $3.21 per month.
The Council will approve a new labor contract with the Fratenal Order of Police. It includes pay increases of 4.4 percent next year, and 2 percent in 2026.
The Council will look at a stronger ordinance to control illegal camping. Business owners need help in dealing with homeless people who are “doing things” that are inappropriate near their properties.
