WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A Derby man and his pet were killed in a Christmas night fire. The fire happened around 11 p.m. in the 700 block of E. Meadowlark, near Woodlawn.
The Derby fire chief tells KSN News that a man walking his dog saw the fire coming from the back of the duplex and called 911. He warned neighbors. Crews arrived to find flames coming out of the window. They went in and found a man in his 70s in a bedroom.
“He appeared to be home alone at the time. Have couple conflicting reports about whether he lives here by himself or whether there’s somebody, but they accounted for everyone that has been here, stayed here in the past,” Derby Fire Chief John Turner said.

Turner said the fire was contained to one room and the hallway. There is smoke damage throughout. The state fire marshal’s office has been called to investigate the cause of the fire.
