Kansas veteran talks about experience that changed his life

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Wichita’s Joe Weeks isn’t a man of many words, but he is a proud veteran whose love for our country inspired him to join the U.S. Air Force.

“Well, I was just proud to be able to serve the United States and help out that way.”

Joe served from 1968 to 1972, and while he did so some brief, temporary duty at a base in Turkey, he spent most of his time in the United States.

During boot camp, he had an experience that showed him what’s beyond our country’s borders.

“I went to boot camp at Lackland Airforce Base, and while I was there, they had the World’s Fair. So they let us go down there for one day. Then after that, they made me a motor pool mechanic.”

Joe spent the next four years making sure it was smooth sailing for the Air Force’s ground vehicles. The top brass even noticed him.

“They found out that I could paint cars, so they put me in a body shop and I painted the commander’s car one time, so that was about the best thing I ever did.”
