WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Sedgwick County Board of Commissioners spent some time during Wednesday’s meeting to say goodbye to two commissioners. This was the last meeting for David Dennis and Sarah Lopez.
The commissioners watched videos about them and then praised all the work the two have accomplished over the years.
Dennis has represented District 3 for eight years, but his service to the community goes back five decades. He served in the U.S. Air Force for 29 years, taught at North High for 11 years, served on the State Board of Education and many other boards and committees, was a Boy Scout leader for 30 years, and serves at his church.
He is pleased with what the commission has accomplished during his eight years, including:
- A new biomed facility that will be co-located with Comcare Crisis Center in downtown Wichita,
- A new regional mental health hospital ,
- Fixing the county’s staffing problems so people don’t have to work as much overtime,
- Funding for the Sedgwick County Zoo, which is preparing for five baby elephants this year, and
- Funding for Exploration Place, which is building “epic” playscapes .
