Blizzard conditions, wicked winds lead to power outages, traffic headaches across Kansas

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Winds exceeding 70 mph and whiteout conditions in parts of western Kansas created problems on highways and in individual towns. Snowfall reports of about half of a foot or more were reported across several areas in the west. As of 11 a.m., the high mark for snowfall was Sheridan County with an accumulation of eight inches reported. As the storm continued, the City of Russell was among the communities heavily impacted by the late winter blizzard.

Early Wednesday afternoon, Russell experienced a citywide power outage. White-out conditions made restoration efforts near impossible. At about 1 p.m., conditions improved enough for the gradual power-restoration process to begin, but the city advised that some areas of the town suffered damage in the winter storm, and “will continue to experience an outage until [utility crews] can address those specific areas.”
