Celebrating safely: Wichita residents gear up for Fourth of July with fireworks and family

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Fireworks tents and stores were busy Thursday as residents prepared for the holiday weekend. While it has been legal to buy fireworks in Kansas since June 20, many communities, including Wichita, only permit sales and use during the days leading up to the Fourth of July.

Thursday marked the first day fireworks could be legally shot off in Wichita, and families across the city were stocking up for a weekend of celebrations. Several people picking up fireworks said they’re looking forward to barbecues, local events, and spending time with extended family.

“I’ve got nephews and young nieces, and they love to do it. And so it’s one of my favorite things to do to come collect some of this stuff. And most of it I won’t even set on fire. They will because I just love watching them do it. I love watching their enjoyment,” Shawn Danielson, an area resident who was buying fireworks, told KSN…
