WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – The Sedgwick County Zoo announced the death of “King of the Tropics,” a male golden-headed quetzal.
The bird lived to be 34 and a half years old—more than double the typical lifespan of 15 to 20 years old. He was the oldest known individual of his species, the zoo said.
“Sweet and gentle by nature, he had a fondness for grapes and was known to vocalize his displeasure if his morning snack arrived late, greeting keepers with what could only be described as a scolding,” the zoo said. “To know him was to love him.”…
