Kansas warns horse owners after disease cases

MANHATTAN, Kan. (KSNW) — Two horses in Kansas have tested positive for serious diseases, prompting action from the Kansas Department of Agriculture.

A horse in Sedgwick County tested positive for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) and later died. Several other horses at the same facility may also be infected, according to the department. The property is under quarantine, and nearby horses are being monitored. EIA is a serious disease in horses with no cure, but it does not affect humans.

In Harper County, another horse tested positive for West Nile virus. It had not been vaccinated but is recovering. West Nile virus spreads through mosquitoes and can be deadly to horses, though it can’t spread from horse to horse or to people.
