Wichita Police turn on new gunshot detection system

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Wichita Police Department says they have activated its new gunshot detection system.

The Raven Gunfire Detection System is from the same manufacturer as the Flock license plate readers system, which the department routinely uses to help solve crimes. The gunfire detection system uses a series of acoustic listening devices to help pinpoint the source of gunfire in real-time.

“The Raven system is a key part of our broader effort to improve community safety. The system helps us respond faster and efficiently,” says Chief Joe Sullivan. “Real-time alerts improve officer awareness, especially in neighborhoods most affected by gun violence.”

The department says the system has been deployed in areas where crime statistics show the most significant number of gun-related crimes in Wichita. In October, the Wichita City Council approved the purchase of the system, along with additional Flock cameras…
