New baby pygmy hippo born at Tanganyika Wildlife Park

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Tanganyika Wildlife Park has welcomed a rare new arrival: a male pygmy hippo named Mars.

Born one month ago, Mars is the fifth calf of Posie and Pluto, a breeding pair that arrived at the park in 2014. Tanganyika is the only zoo in Kansas actively working to preserve the endangered pygmy hippo species, with fewer than 3,000 remaining in the wild.

“There were only three pygmy hippos born here in the United States, and so every baby is really important, and males, especially right now, are underrepresented in our population,” said LynnLee Schidt, integrator at the park…
