TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has issued this year’s first blue-green algae warning for Lake Afton, a popular recreation spot in Sedgwick County. The lake is one of several across the state now under health advisories due to toxic algae blooms.

Blue-green algae can look like green scum, paint, or foam on the water. It can be harmful to people and animals through skin contact, swallowing, or breathing in spray from the water. Symptoms may include rashes, vomiting, diarrhea, and headaches.
A Warning status means the water is not safe for swimming, boating, or other direct contact. Pets and livestock should be kept away, and people should avoid inhaling water spray or letting animals eat dried algae on the shore.
KDHE advises the following precautions for Lake Afton and other affected lakes:
- No swimming or boating
- Keep pets and livestock away from the water
- Do not drink lake water
- Rinse off immediately if you come in contact with the water
- Eat only fish fillets and discard all other parts
- Avoid areas with visible algae
