New tech helps WPD zero in on gunfire in seconds

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Wichita Police say new technology is helping them reach shooting scenes quicker — and it’s already making a difference.

The Raven gunshot detection system uses sensors to pinpoint the location of gunfire. Deputy Chief of Investigations Paul Duff said it recently reduced officers’ response time by three minutes.

Search warrants target transnational drug cartel in Wichita and Sedgwick County

“A supervisor heard the gunshots, and 30 seconds later the system went off,” Duff said. “It confirmed what he believed and gave the exact location. Officers were able to get there three minutes before dispatch put the call out.”

The system has been installed in north, east, and south Wichita, covering four square miles. Duff said those areas were chosen based on five years of gunshot data…
