Wichita Public Schools start year with 70 teacher vacancies

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Wichita Public Schools will start the school year on Thursday with about 70 open teacher positions, according to USD 259 Superintendent Kelly Bielefeld.

The open positions are for 30 special education teachers, 16 middle school teachers, nine high school teachers, and 13 elementary school teachers. The district employs around 4,000 teachers.

“That tracks with the trends we have been seeing both locally and across the state with the continued need for special education teachers in particular,” Bielefeld said. “Qualified long-term substitutes that will be mostly retired teachers filling a lot of those vacant positions in our classroom.”…
