New Wichita agency expands foster care with wraparound services

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A new agency that blends foster care with community support and mental health services officially opened its doors Friday in Wichita.

Dorothy’s Lane, 2201 E. 13th St., is now licensed as the state’s first African American-led foster home placement agency. The center also provides a private school for foster children, therapy and mental health support, equine therapy, and court-ordered services such as parenting and drug or alcohol classes.

The nonprofit has been serving families since 2019 with food, clothing, and hygiene pantries, and CEO Carol Brewer said the expansion into foster placement fills a major gap.

“We are the first African American foster home placement agency here in the state of Kansas with wraparound services that is also associated with a social service agency,” Brewer said. “While we’re making sure these children have a safe place to call home, we also have the services for the parents and for the families that need those services. Because you have to start ground up. And you have to bring in that village.”…
