Sedgwick County adds bigger stop signs at dangerous intersection

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Sedgwick County Commissioner Stephanie Wise said bigger stop signs have been added at an intersection that has a history of deadly crashes.

The intersection is 29th Street North and 135th Street West. The latest deadly crash happened on Thursday, Aug. 14.

At a news conference Monday, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said there have been 16 crashes at this intersection in the past five years:

  • 2 resulted in fatalities
  • 6 resulted in injuries
  • 10 were property damage only
  • 14 were a result of a driver failing to yield to traffic
  • 1 was the result of unsafe passing
  • 1 was the result of an unsafe U-turn

This week, the county took extra steps to improve safety. Larger 48-inch stop signs replaced the 36-inch signs. Cross-traffic and stop-ahead warnings were also installed to alert drivers at the intersection…
