Sweetie Pie, a 53-year-old hippopotamus at the Sedgwick County Zoo, (SCZ), died on August 27, 2025. She succumbed to ongoing health issues due to her advanced age.
In recent years, keepers and veterinarians at SCZ had been providing specialized geriatric care to keep
Sweetie Pie comfortable and ensure she maintained a good quality of life. In the past few weeks, her health began to decline and the decision was made to humanely euthanize her in order to prevent any suffering.
