Augusta battles budget shortfall, hiring new police officers in 2026

AUGUSTA, Kan. (KWCH) – The City of Augusta is looking to hire more police officers, but city leaders are trying to figure out how to fit the new positions into the 2026 budget.

The Augusta Department of Safety says it needs at least four new officers, yet city officials are weighing how to make that happen without raising taxes. Tuesday night, the city council held a special meeting to review the budget. Councilmembers agreed the city needs more officers—but want to avoid burdening residents.

“Everybody, I think, wants to support the police; we all want to do that,” said Augusta City Councilman Shane Scott. “Nobody wants their taxes to go up.”…
