‘Like a sardine can’: Roof torn off Kansas elementary school; storm damage repair costly

ELYRIA, Kan. (KSNW) – Severe storms pummeled part of the Sunflower State Wednesday night, bringing softball-sized hail and 71 mph winds to McPherson County. Towns stretching from Salina to Wichita are dealing with the damage.

Elyria Christian School, located southeast of McPherson, canceled classes on Thursday due to the destruction. The principal estimates the long-term cost of repairing the roof alone will be between $10,000 and $20,000.

The storm tore off part of the roof, while hail smashed holes in the ceiling. Rain-soaked carpets and dozens of books ruined student laptops and damaged some of the school’s HVAC systems. Two classrooms are unusable.
