ACLU says Sedgwick Co. bail system ‘punishes’ people who can’t pay

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – The American Civil Liberties Union of Kansas and several Wichita organizations are urging the Sedgwick County Court System to change its bail practices, saying the current system unfairly impacts people living in poverty.

The ACLU analyzed Sedgwick County Jail data from December 2023 to December 2024. The group says the county’s use of a bail schedule, where bail amounts are set according to the charge rather than individual circumstances, often keeps people behind bars because they can’t afford to pay.
