Whitewater farmer turned 70-year-old gyrocopter pilot

WHITEWATER, Kan. (KSNW) — After spending most of her 55 years helping run her family’s farm, a Whitewater woman decided to take to the skies.

In the 1980s, Australian native Christine Toevs found the love of her life in Whitewater, native Jim Toevs. The couple spent decades running their Whitewater farm as business partners and husband and wife. Back in 2010, the duo took on the unique hobby of piloting gyrocopters.

“Unlike the helicopter rotor,” Christine explained, “which is geared to an engine and a transmission, and they spin and create lift by pushing the air down, with the gyro, our air flows from underneath to the top, and we are pushed forward by the propeller in the engine.”
