Driver killed when car crashes into tree, catches fire west of Maize

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – One person was killed in a crash west of Maize on Monday. The crash happened just before 2 a.m. at 45th Street North and 135th Street West.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said an Apple crash alert was reported, and Maize and Colwich police both responded. They found a Pontiac G6 that had struck a tree and was on fire. Colwich firefighters located a person inside the vehicle, who was pronounced dead. The identity of that person hasn’t been released.

The sheriff’s office said preliminary findings show that the car was traveling west on 45th Street and that west of 135th, the road transitions to gravel. Investigators believe the driver lost control on the gravel and hit a tree.
