WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The government shutdown and pause on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program have area food pantries reaching deep into their cupboards.
On Tuesday, Wichita-area providers gave an update on the impact of the uncertainty surrounding SNAP. They outlined their response to the increased demand for food assistance across the state.
Brian Walker, president and CEO of the Kansas Food Bank, emphasized the urgency of the situation, saying the organization is preparing for a “perfect storm” as more families face food insecurity. The food bank is ramping up efforts to ensure that those in need can still access meals, especially during the holiday season.

“We do see an increase when people have to start turning on their furnace and those kinds of things,” said Walker. “But we also need more food because we all want to provide people that are struggling with the same type of meal that we all get to go sit down with our families or our friends during a holiday.”…
