Local businesses begin rounding purchases due to penny shortage

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) -The United States Mint stopped producing pennies in August, and businesses are beginning to feel the pinch as they round purchases to the nearest nickel.

“I’ve been kind of waiting to hear information about what was going to happen, and then last week the bank said, ‘No more pennies,’” said Mitch Nodland, owner of Eastgate Lanes, a longtime bowling alley in Newton.

When Nodland realized he would not be receiving new pennies, he reached out to the company Eastgate Lanes uses to process transactions.

“They said, ‘Yeah, there is software here, you can choose between rounding down or rounding up or rounding to the nearest (nickel)’, and we chose just to round to the nearest,” Nodland said…
