A Kansas man has been found guilty on federal charges of smuggling methamphetamine into the U.S. after a jury trial in Del Rio, Texas. Juan Antonio Antuna Jr., 32, of Wichita, was convicted for one count of importation of methamphetamine and one count of conspiracy to import methamphetamine, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas.
The conviction stems from an incident on March 16, where Antuna drove a van with Mexican plates into the Del Rio International Bridge. Upon his arrival from Mexico, Antuna presented a Kansas driver’s license and declared merchandise and food products to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, but a later inspection revealed more than just foodstuffs and merchandise. In addition to items Antuna had declared, officers discovered two concrete pedestals that concealed a white powdery substance, later identified as methamphetamine, weighing 6.06 kgs.
The trial for Antuna started on Oct. 30 and concluded swiftly the next day with a guilty verdict on Oct. 31. Sentencing for Antuna has yet to be scheduled. The conviction was announced by U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons of the Western District of Texas…
