Great Bend School Resource Officer Honored for Heroic Actions During Wichita Mall Shooting

At the Great Bend City Council meeting on November 17, 2025, School Resource Officer Paul Millard received the Bronze Wreath of Valor from the Wichita Police Department. The award recognized his actions during the Towne East Mall shooting in Wichita on August 8, 2025. Millard was off duty and shopping with his wife when he responded to gunfire in the parking lot. He restrained a suspect and helped keep others safe until police arrived.

Detective Rogers of the Wichita Police Department said Millard’s response helped police apprehend all three suspects and aided two juveniles who were shot. The suspects, all juveniles, have been charged in district court. The cases are still pending. Wichita Mayor Lily Wu sent a letter thanking Millard for his actions.
