A push of polar air is settling south into Kansas the next 24 hours.
Snow has tracked east and will continue to skim our counties in Western Kansas through early tonight.
It started as rain with snow mixing in at times. This will become all snow as temperatures drop this evening.
Any accumulation tonight will be kept under an inch. The southwest corner of the state may have a higher shot of getting closer to 1″ of snow. We should not have any major impacts to travel in Kansas.
The bulk of the energy and moisture will shift from Colorado into New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle. Traveling to any of these states, use extreme caution due to slick roadways.
Strong wind gusts riding behind the front ease overnight. Temperatures fall to the single digits over Northeast Kansas by Thursday morning with the KSN viewing area dropping into the teens. Wind chills at the bus stop will be in the single digits and teens.
Highs will dip largely to the 30s for highs. Elkhart reaches the lower 40s.
This cold blast will be brief. We bounce back to the 40s with some 50s in the west by Friday. It should be great weather for Santa’s visit and the tree lighting ceremony at Naftzger Park on Friday evening.
Saturday looks mild and near the norm ahead of another disturbance Saturday night into Sunday. The track still needs to be worked out. Most of the moisture looks to reside near and east of the Missouri state line.
The slightest shift could bring it back west into more of Kansas. It will be a cold game Sunday night on KSN with temperatures in the 20s by evening and falling into the upper teens by the 4th quarter in Kansas City.
This system will lower temperatures for us on Sunday. In true Kansas fashion, we flip back warmer next week.
