Man killed Wichita woman who answered knock at her door. He’s sentenced to prison

A 26-year-old Wichita man was sentenced Wednesday to 13 years, 9 months in prison for the shooting death of a 42-year-old woman last year.

A Sedgwick County jury in October found Jose Silvano Velazquez-Carillo guilty of second-degree murder in the Feb. 15, 2024, killing of Candace Amack of Wichita, court records show. His 165-month prison sentence was the maximum allowed and followed prosecutors’ recommendations, Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Lyndsee Stover said.

“Over $16,000.00 in restitution was ordered total between the victim’s family and the crime victim’s compensation board,” she added.

Amack was shot multiple times in the head and other areas of her body after answering a knock at her door around 4 p.m. in the 1400 block of South George Washington Boulevard, near Lincoln. After police used surveillance video to track down Velazquez-Carillo, he told investigators a man he thought owned the house had ordered someone to kill him three years before, according to a probable cause affidavit…
